About thirty years ago, a good-natured friend named Paul coaxed me into trying surfing on the North Coast of California. Despite my reluctance and inexperience, I decided to give it a shot.  In true California surf style, we loaded up an old VW bus and made our way to the ocean. I got my wet suit on and a received a few instructions on how to negotiate rips, wave patterns, duck dives, and kook cords. I might have been confused, but I was definitely determined.

I was soaking wet, freezing cold, and the surge of the ocean was clearly kicking my butt. After I got the hang of it, I started to enjoy the challenge and the scenery from the ocean's perspective. After a few hours, I was ready for some hot clam chowder, a cold beer, and a hot tub to thaw out in. I went to sleep that night thinking about the exhilaration of riding the waves and woke up still feeling the energy of the ocean. That feeling has never left.

All that week in the old town of Arcadia, California, word was out that a newbie was now a surfer, and the locals would call out to me, “What’s up Surf Dog?!” That stuck with me through the years, and a brand was born.
